Book Synopsis

In 1850, Prussian immigrant, Gregor Opfer, began serving a life sentence in America’s most infamous prison, Sing Sing Penitentiary. A deeply religious man, Opfer believes his sentence is his penance from God for the evil life he led in Prussia and so he endures the inhumane living and working conditions with unusual poise. One night a routine beating turns especially violent and leaves Opfer crippled for life, effectively sowing the seeds of discontent. But what the guards don’t realize is that Opfer is a highly trained former assassin of Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s secret terror squad, Da Sonneleute, and he can escape anytime he pleases, crippled or not.
